Hi there, I’m Annabel.
Do you need to communicate an idea effectively, tell a story that will grab and hold a reader’s attention, or convince people to invest in you or your product? I can help with all of that.
As a freelance journalist:
I have 17 years of experience writing features, interviews, reviews, investigations and opinion pieces, including ten years of working for The Age as an arts and entertainment reporter
I’m a versatile journalist with a broad range of interests, covering everything from music, arts, popular culture and lifestyle through to sexual assault and social justice issues, real estate and design, and psychology and mental health
my work has appeared in The Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, Rolling Stone Australia, Vice, Billboard, The Daily Beast, Elle, Vogue Living, Qantas, Resident Advisor, Mixmag and more
I won the Drum Award for Best Investigative Journalism for my work investigating sexual assault in dance music for Mixmag
I’ve written cover stories for The Age/The Sydney Morning Herald, Rolling Stone Australia, Mixmag and more
I’m highly empathetic, relentlessly curious, rigorous and tenacious
I always meet deadlines and go above and beyond with research to deliver the best, most impactful work possible
As a copywriter:
I was a professional copywriter before I was a professional journalist — my first “real” job was working as a fashion copywriter for Marks & Spencer in London. It required a lot of creativity to find a hundred ways to describe a plain white shirt, let me tell you
My clients have included luxury hotel chains, music festivals, major arts organisations, blue chip real estate agencies and tech startups
To sharpen my skills, I’ve just enrolled in three courses at the Australian School of Copywriting: Copywriting for Profit; the Business of Freelance Copywriting and SEO copywriting (yes, I can help with SEO too)
I work fast, I’m a perfectionist, I always meet deadlines, and I won’t stop til you’re happy (just like those infomercial steak knives, I come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee)
As an editor/producer/strategist/marketer/content creator:
I’ve done lot of weird and wonderful things in my 24 years of writing (shoutout to Jo Barry, who edited me as a 16-year-old writing for Fashion Journal)
I’ve worked as a ghost writer and editor for major book publishers including Allen & Unwin and Hardie Grant
whether you’re a musician in need of a press release/bio or an interim management agency with a stable of clients to profile, I can help tell your story
I can write podcast scripts (I’ve just finished writing and producing a podcast about sexual assault in the music industry and completed the short course Creating a Narrative Podcast at NYU)
I’m an obsessive, tireless and scrupulous researcher (this might be my favourite thing to do actually)
I’ve been invited to speak on and host various music industry panels, podcasts and radio shows
I appeared in the BBC3 documentary “Music’s Dirty Secrets: Women Fight Back”
in a previous life I reviewed restaurants and bars (that was fun actually, I’d like to do more of that)
I can provide snappy, engaging content for your websites, LinkedIn pages, social media accounts, liner notes, newsletters, menus, cover letters, dating profiles...whatever
I’m a punctilious proofreader and copy editor, and an experienced digital producer
I really, really care about getting things right and doing a good job (too much, some might say, but isn’t that what you want in someone telling your story?)
on the PR and marketing front, I can quickly identify what you need to do to get to where you want to be, and help you get there
I have great taste*
* I prefer Pepsi Max to Coke Zero, which scandalises some people, and I’ve a ton of guilty pleasures but who doesn’t?
What else can I tell you?
I was born in Melbourne, Australia and am currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Like most people with a pulse, I love travelling and soaking up different cultures and I have lived in London, Paris and Italy (Perugia and Bologna). My Italian is decent, my French is absolutely not. I DJ for fun (mainly in my bedroom, where I sometimes record mixes for Refuge Worldwide), I’ve just commenced a Masters of Psychology via Harvard Extension School, and I recently launched a newsletter, The Politics of Dancing. I’m a true Taurus (determined, stubborn), an introvert who thrives on connecting with people (real conversations please, no small talk), and my useless talent is knowing the perfect-sized vessel for leftovers, at a glance.
Drop me a line with any work-related queries, or just to say hi.
